a group performance after incorporating AI into a songwriting program

It seems that everywhere you turn these days, someone is discussing AI. It’s in the news, it’s in our inboxes, and it’s definitely the topic of conversation at the coffee machine.

It reminds me a bit of when synthesizers and drum machines first gained popularity in the music scene. There was a lot of excitement, but also a fair bit of nervousness. Would the machines replace the musicians? Would the “soul” of the music get lost in the code?

Spoiler alert: The music survived. In fact, for those who learned to use the new tools wisely, the music got even more interesting.

The same holds for business today. Incorporating AI isn’t about replacing the unique talents of your team; it’s about giving them a new instrument to play.

But once you’ve taken the plunge and adopted these new tools, how do you measure the results? What does “winning” actually look like in an AI-enhanced world?

Here is my take on recognizing success after you’ve added AI to the setlist.

1. You Have More Time for the “Jazz.”

In music, you have the rhythm section holding down the beat—the steady, repetitive work that keeps the song moving. Then, you have the soloists who improvise, create, and add the flair.

Success with AI looks like this: The AI takes over the repetitive “rhythm section” tasks—the data entry, the scheduling, the initial research. This frees your human team to focus on the “jazz”—the strategy, creative problem-solving, and relationship-building.

If your team is spending less time on spreadsheets and more time dreaming up the next big innovation, that is a massive win. You are essentially buying back time for creativity.

2. Your “ROInspiration” Goes Up

I talk a lot about something I call ROInspiration®. We all know about Return on Investment, but in the creative world—and yes, business is an imaginative world—you need a Return on Inspiration.

When you successfully incorporate AI, it acts as a brainstorming partner. It’s a co-writer that never gets tired. It can throw out a hundred ideas in seconds. Most of them might be off-key, but one might be the hook that starts a hit song.

Success means your team isn’t staring at a blank page anymore. They are utilizing AI to jump-start their thinking, resulting in faster innovation and more innovative ideas. If you’re seeing a surge in new concepts and solutions, your AI integration is working.

3. The Human Connection Gets Stronger

This might sound counterintuitive. How can more technology lead to more human connection?

Simply put, if the busy work doesn’t bog you down, you have more bandwidth for people.

Success looks like a sales team that utilizes AI to analyze data, allowing them to spend their actual phone time on having deep, meaningful conversations with clients. It appears to be a leader who utilizes AI to streamline workflows, thereby freeing up their afternoons to mentor a junior employee.

If incorporating AI results in less screen time and more face time, you’ve hit the sweet spot.

4. You Haven’t Lost Your Voice

Here is the most critical metric of success: Authenticity.

In my customized songwriting programs, I always tell people, “No one can be you like you can!”. Your unique voice is your greatest asset.

The danger with AI is that it can make everything sound the same—generic, polished, and robotic. Success is achieved when you utilize AI to refine your work, while the essence of your brand remains 100% yours.

If your customers still feel the heart and passion behind your brand—if they still hear your song coming through the speakers—then you have successfully navigated the technology without losing your identity.

It’s A Duet, Not A Solo

Ultimately, success with AI isn’t about the technology taking over; it’s about leveraging it effectively. It’s about a beautiful duet between human creativity and technological efficiency.

It’s about finding the harmony between the data and the dream.

So, take a look at your team. Are they more engaged? Are they more creative? Are they connecting more deeply with each other and your clients? If the answer is yes, then you’re making beautiful music together.
