writing a song about work

Songs about work have been around almost as long as work has. At least, as long as work has been formalized, in the sense of having a job. I was thinking of the most famous songs about work the other day and it occurred to me that these well-known tunes often have important significance.

Songs with work related themes typically make a statement; often in protest or to contrast the difference between being on the job and being at play. Some of my favorite songs like this make me long for getting out of the office. They inspire me to seek my freedom, let my hair down and just have some fun.

And songs about work heighten our desire for change; to challenge authority and assert our independence.

Way back, there were work songs that people sang together while they were laboring; quite often in hard, physical jobs. Joining together in song helps us feel better and creates connections with the people we’re singing with. This is true when you’re at a concert nowadays, and was also true back in the day when people were building railroads or working farms or plantations.

In modern times, rock, blues, country, pop and hip-hop have popularized songs that stand in protest to work that’s unfair, boring, or just doesn’t align with our dreams!

Work Songs From Way Back When

Jimmy Witherspoon was one of my favorite blues singers. Years ago I heard him sing a song called, “Tell Him I’m Gone” and it slayed me. The lyrics are so descriptive I could picture the singer trying to escape from the chain-gang. The song’s plaintive cry for freedom is overpowering. Johnny Cash also recorded this gem and it’s worth checking out.

A classic like “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad” was based on a spiritual and later recorded by quite a few folks singers. This is important stuff; music that reminds us of who people were and what they were doing. The song, “John Henry” is another classic that’s just a great story.

These songs, and others from this time, drive home the power of music and song to help us navigate the world and our work life, good or bad.

More Recent Famous Songs About Work

More recently, it seems that songs related to the working life are statements of protest, independence or longing. They capture our desire to be free, or to be more satisfied. Or they call us to just get the heck out of the office or factory and go party!

  • Taking Care of Business, by Bachman Turner Overdrive is a classic that still gets a lot of play. It’s a high energy ode that starts with the daily commute. It’s still relatable after all these years and the track is simply fun.
  • Manic Monday, by The Bangles is the classic, “I don’t want to go to work” song. I wish it were Sunday…
  • Take This Job And Shove It, performed by Johnny Paycheck is empowering and fun. Who hasn’t dreamed of telling their boss at one time or another to take the job and shove it. Even if you like your job, there are days like this. I’ve always wondered how many people were inspired by this song to actually quit and make a life changing decision. I bet there are quite few.
  • 9 to 5 – I bet you’ve been wondering when I’d mention this one. Probably one of the most famous songs about work, this is an iconic protest song and a call to action for change. Dolly Parton has never been shy about speaking up and this song captures an entire era.
  • The Job That Ate My Brain, by the Ramones. Wow, the title says it all, and the lyrics say a lot. I’d never heard this song until I started doing research for this blog post. This is pure punk; protest, energy and attitude. Some day when you’re feeling emboldened, you might want to play this at work.
  • Busy Man, performed by Billy Ray Cyrus. This song was written by my good friend Bob Regan and with co-writer George Teren. I was still actively writing hit country songs when this one was released and I remember performing it with songwriter, Bob, at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. The last stanza talks about how you never see a tombstone with the words, “If only I had spent more time at work”. This is a great ode to regret for focusing on work to the neglect of your personal life. Like all the great songs listed here, it will make you stop and think!
