I FOLLOW my daughter on Twitter now. And the other day she tweeted the following: #cookies. That was the entire tweet. My mind immediately went through the strategic process a business person’s mind would go – Hmm, I thought to myself… what’s the angle, what’s the strategy? How can this get my daughter more followers or help her promote her message? What does she mean and what does she want? So I replied via twitter and I asked her, “What’s the significance of your tweet, #cookies?” She replied, “I was just eating a cookie! Hee”.
WOW – That knocked me out, she was just eating a cookie, no strategy, no plan, no goals, just a cookie. Now, imagine if you were in the cookie business and you were following that hashtag, #cookie? What significance would you attach to my daughter’s tweet? Who would you think she is? How would you try to market to her?

Well she doesn’t care, she was just happy and she tweeted

This really made me think about what I’m doing online. Social media, hmm, what about that word social. I’m calling it ‘social media’ but my brain is thinking ‘business media’,  something to keep in mind for all of us scrambling to understand how to leverage this for our business. It’s okay to be yourself, to be social, to let your guard down, to show us who you are so we can all get to know you better. And sometimes it’s only about ‘cookies’, no hashtag, just something yummy!
