Hmm…I need some great creative team building ideas…do you have any? I get that question all time since I live in the team building arena. And my answer revolves around big picture thinking, rather than suggesting specific programs. I do have some specific favorites, but I think it’s important that you think big picture first. Once you understand what you’re after conceptually, it’s easier to find creative team building ideas you can bring to your workforce. So why creativity? Why should you care? How will it improve your bottom line? I’ll tell you why, if you keep reading!

  • Why creativity? Have you ever had a problem…of course you have. Do you have a problem now…of course you do! No worries. Having and solving problems is inherent in our work life as well as our personal life. So you have a problem and you don’t yet have a solution. Hmm…you need to think of something. How will that happen? You need ideas. You’re looking for that light bulb moment but you’re not sure how to start your search. Now multiply this problem by everyone on your team who may not be feeling creatively confident. You NEED creativity to solve problems. And you probably need a team building program that can help your team understand and experience how to be more creative. Make Stuff. A well facilitated team building program centered around making stuff allows you to experience creative problem solving. Find a program with a facilitator who knows how to tie together what you’re doing with your business challenges. Painting is a step by step process that solves a problem. You start with a blank canvas and you end up with a picture. You can use this activity to envision the picture of your optimal business or high performing team. You can use Lego or building blocks to create your current state of team and then build models to create how you’d like your team to look in the future. You can write songs – that’s what my company helps you do. The songwriting process helps you brainstorm lots of thoughts, questions and dreams. You use this group process to create an emotionally packed story about your team at it’s best. Once you know how you’d like your team to be when you’re at your best, you can then begin the journey there.

  1. Great point about making stuff. A lot of team building exercises tend to be more on the competitive, sporty side. What most people do not realize is that real creative team building is about making stuff… anything – music, art, fashion, food! Great article in that you made that one point most important.
