Mergers and Acquisitions are often difficult new beginnings. Team building is necessary to create a blended family among your new entity.
I don’t know that I’ve ever used the word ‘necessary’ before when talking about team building, but in this case I’m putting it out there. Mergers and acquisitions are hard. Thus it’s vital to work toward creating a new and unified vision going forward. It’s important to acknowledge the difficulties of transition with the termination of some employees, changing roles for those who stay, and the need to embrace new leadership.
We’ve recently worked with two separate organizations who either merged or were acquired. While preparing for these programs, it occurred to me that the situation was similar to blending families after re-marriage. This is where the team building song creation process can really help. Even on the back side of a merger and acquisition, it’s important to validate, it’s important to acknowledge and help employees embrace transition; to find unified new vision that represents the blended organizational vision.
New Vision – New Song

- What are your values and vision?
- What services do you provide?
- How are you stronger or better now?
Answers to those questions prompt honest conversation and the result of that conversation becomes the story, the song and the unified vision. Songs enable us to take lots of information and distill that content into impactful, fun and memorable messages. How cool would it be if you could sing your elevator speech? How often can you create a memorable, catchy elevator speech that your employees can genuinely relate to?
After a merger and acquisition, you need a catalyst to coalesce the change into something catchy, something memorable, something soulful and tuneful. You’ll need a TUNEup – arghh pardon the obvious pun, but I couldn’t resist. And it’s okay to laugh – in fact it’s vital!
