CSR Team Building shouldn’t be an obligation. It should be a pleasure. But quite often we find pleasure and self-fulfillment when we take on obligations we may not be initially enthused about.
I didn’t want to leave the house the other day, not that I mind getting out! But I was busy being busy, and getting ready for a team building trip to NYC. So I was a little annoyed with myself for over-committing by having agreed to do a local CSR team building program for The First Tee, a non-profit that supports youth nationwide.
I drove down to Franklin, TN rushed and bothered, thinking about what time I’d be back at my home office to get back to work. Several hours later, I was transported to a different place; a place that reminds me why I do this work, why creativity is so important, and why it’s VITAL to engage with the community, even when it inconveniences us.
I owe the kids at The First Tee my gratitude, for re-filling me with wonder and for getting me out of my comfort zone and into an inspired place. Sometimes I need a dose of my own medicine and I’m reminded of a phrase I often use with clients, “Get out-of-the-box and Get with us.”
This group of kids created a song close to their hearts and lifted me up along the way. Community giving can reap rewards that almost make us feel selfish!
Here’s the chorus lyric:
The First Tee set the stage for me
Filled my life with lots of opportunities
Making connections through networking
Now I have a go-to team
The First Tee set the stage for me
