5 Group Activities Using Music

Music, the common denominator for many of us, is a great way to engage your team. The possibilities for group activities using music are as endless as your imagination. Team building continues to be important for success and using music as a team building exercise can be very powerful. Music has the ability to help working groups break through the hierarchical corporate setup that often inhibits great teamwork.

Group Activities Using Music – Do It Yourself

Not the same old karaoke

Yes, you will need an instrumental(karaoke) track for this. But you don’t need to be knee deep in happy hour to make this work. Using a well-known melody and several flip charts, you can brainstorm around a specific theme. Maybe it’s a new product launch, or client proposal. Use flip charts to capture ideas, themes and whittle it all down to fit within the melody and meter of the music track you’re using. The songwriting process should help you refine your thoughts, necessitated by having to fit ideas into succinct musical passages. Create an entire lyric, then record it.

Get outside and make some noise

Yes, you will need to leave your office, but hey that’s not a bad thing. Go to a park or a beach. Empty bottles filled with pebbles make great shakers. Seashells, or larger rocks with sticks, make great scrapers. You can string together old soda lids to make a tambourine sound. You’ll be your own rhythm section and then you can rap your company story. This makes a great video to prove to HR that your group activity using music is real team building!

MTV & VH1 has nothing on You

Here’s a fantastic team building program that involves group collaboration, organization, delegation of responsibility and group output. Using the song lyric you created in the first section above, make a music video. You’ll need a director, a producer, a camera person, costumes etc. The story line will be your song lyric and location is sky’s the limit. By the way, here at Kidbilly Music, we’re getting ready to launch a music video option as part of our Team Building Through Song® programs…stay tuned.

Conference Energizers and Ice Breakers

These are hard to get right. And by right, I don’t mean perfect. Conference energizers and icebreakers are great opportunities to harness the power of group activities using music. Five hundred people singing about their common experience is a sight to behold.
